Types of Community Pharmacists in Ireland

If you’re moving to Ireland to have a career in pharmacy, the first thing you need to consider is what role you will get with your level of experience. As a community pharmacist, you will have the option to work as a support pharmacist, supervising pharmacist, superintendent pharmacist, or a relief or locum pharmacist. Read on to find out more about these roles and their responsibilities.

Support Pharmacists

Once you have arrived in Ireland and successfully registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), you will be eligible to work in any chemist as a support pharmacist. As a support pharmacist, you will work under a supervising pharmacist and be responsible for ensuring the effective operation of the dispensary in accordance with all the legal responsibilities pertaining to the profession of pharmacy. Supervising Pharmacists

After you have completed 3 years of post-registration experience, you are eligible to become a supervising pharmacist. According to the PSI, the supervising pharmacist is “the person responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the pharmacy.” You will be legally responsible for overseeing one pharmacy and ensuring that it is fully compliant with the Pharmacy Act (2007). Superintendent Pharmacist

For this position, you will also need 3 years of post-registration experience. According to the PSI, the superintendent pharmacist is “”in overall control of the management of a pharmacy, including its professional and clinical management and management of the administration of the sale and supply of medicines.” It is possible to act as the superintendent pharmacist in more than one pharmacy.

Relief / Locum

When a pharmacy’s regular pharmacist cannot come into work, the pharmacy cannot legally open unless it finds a replacement. As a relief or locum pharmacist, you will fill in for the regular pharmacist on the days they are unavailable. You may work in several different dispensaries each week, or stay for several days to fill any gaps in the roster. As a locum, you have control over your own schedule. Locuming is simple with Clarity, as we do all the hard work for you. Sign up today, download our app, and start booking shifts! Head to our website to find out more.

Each of the roles mentioned above will require you to be registered with the PSI.
